Degree Classification

British university degrees can be awarded with or without honours. Most of the students graduate with an honours degree. Students who complete all the requirements for an Honours Bachelor's degree, but do not receive sufficient merit to be awarded Honours will be awarded the non-honours Bachelor's degree. In addition, if students fail the graduation examination or the dissertation, they will only be awarded the non-honours Bachelor's degree, even if they have a chance to retake the exam or to resubmit the dissertation.

The class of an honours degree in a British university is usually based on a weighted average mark of the assessed work. The degree classifications most British universities follow are shown below. The 2:1 is a minimum requirement for entry to many postgraduate courses in the UK.

Arts and Humanity subjects: 75
50-59分 Lower second-class degree (2:2 degree) Science and Engineering subjects: 75+
Arts and Humanity subjects: 80+
60-69分 Upper second-class degree(2:1 degree) Science and Engineering subjects: 80+
Arts and Humanity subjects: 85+
70 or above First Class Science and Engineering subjects: 85+
Arts and Humanity subjects: 90+
