General Information of SWUPL

The Southwest University of Political Science & Law (SWUPL) is a national public university located in Chongqing, a municipality in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, in China. SWUPL is one of the oldest universities of political science and law created after the People's Republic of China was established. It was among the first group of key universities in China to open after the Chinese economic reform, and was one of the first educational institutes to develop excellent legal talents in China. The university is co-administrated by the Ministry of Education and Chongqing Municipality.

The University has campuses in Shapingba and in Yubei, covering a total area of 500 acres. The Yubei campus is the education centre for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The Shapingba campus is the training base for continuing education and cadre training. The University has a total of 2300 faculty and staff members, and 25,000 full-time students. There are 14 schools, including the School of Civil and Commercial law, the School of Economics Law, the Law School, the School of Administrative Law, the School of International Law, School of Criminal investigation, School of Politics and Public Administration, the School of Marxism, the School of Management, the School of Economics, the School of Journalism and Communication, the School of Foreign Languages, the School of Applied Law, and the School of Juris Master.

The university is qualified to independently recruit guaranteed students, extraordinary athletes, Mainland Tibetan classes, Mainland Mongolian classes, students of Hong Kong-Macau-Taiwan Joint Recruitment, and recommendation students (with the exemption of examination) from Hong Kong and Macau. SWUPL is approved to grant doctoral degrees of first-level legal discipline and master degrees in politics, Marxism, philosophy, applied economics, journalism and communication, and public administration. It offers 10 doctoral programmes, 37 master's programmes, 6 professional master's programmes and 23 bachelor's programmes. Economics Law and Procedural Law are two national key disciplines. Philosophy, applied economics, laws, politics, journalism and communication, and public administration are municipal key disciplines. Also industry & business administration is a municipal noted developing key discipline. In a 2012 discipline evaluation published by the Ministry of Education, the first-level legal discipline at SWUPL was ranked among the top 5 in China.

 

The University is proud of its excellent tradition, solid education strength, wide social reputation and the outstanding contributions of its alumni in the State-building that has contributed to what is widely recognised as the "SWUPL Phenomenon". In the 65 years since the foundation of the University, SWUPL has developed a multi-level and multi-type approach to higher education and has educated more than 200,000 high ranking specialized personnel. It is the university that has provided the most law personnel for CHina. A huge number of alumni have become leading figures in law fields and other professions. Currently, there are nearly 10 SWUPL alumni who are now members of the 17th CPC Central Committee, the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the alternate CPC Central Committee. More than 60 alumni hold posts in the Municipal, Ministerial level and above cadres. Nearly 40 alumni have been or are currently the Chief Justice, first grade and second grade of Associate Justices, or Procurator. SWUPL alumni also hold teaching or research posts in top national Law Schools or Research institutions in the following leading universities: Beijing University, Tsinghua University, Renmin University of China, Fudan University, Wuhan University, Hong Kong University, Macao University, and the Institute of Law of Chinese Academic of Social Science. Many Deans of the Law School are also SWUPL alumni. 18 SWUPL alumni have been elected as among the "Ten Outstanding Young Jurists in China" by the China Law Society. In the league table of "Outstanding Chinese Social Scientists" published by China Alumni Network Authority in 2011, SWUPL was ranked in the top 10 among all the national universities due to number of alumni and teachers who were elected.

It is now a critical time to reform in-depth and to comprehensively promote the rule of law. The University is facing new tasks, new challenges and new opportunities. The faculty and students play an active role and take practical measures to improve the quality of training programmes for talent development and also to further develop education, science research, social services, and cultural heritage functions. Together with the nation, SWUPL will maintain its commitment and determination in the Southwest to face the world through self-growth and development and strive to become an internationally renowned, top-tier, University.
